Thread starter StandHunter Start date Feb 24, StandHunter Member Feb 24, Man, I don't know about y'all, but it seems like forever since last year's turkey season ended. It's been awhile since I've been on the forums here.

Using Locator Calls for Shock Gobbles

Work's been kicking my tail bone, but reading through the turkey forums has gotten me pumped for the upcoming season. I didn't get to hunt much last year, but did manage to kill a pretty nice bird in April. Anyway, I had a question for all of you guys out there.

I'm thinking about adding a pileated woodpecker call to by already "over-full" turkey vest this year. I've got the requsite owl hooter and crow call same one I've had for over 20 years and use them some throughout the season. I've had some success roosting birds with the owl hooter over the years, but never really in getting birds to gobble in the AM. For me the crow call has never really worked.

I've tried it in the AM, during the day, and in the PM, again without much success. Not sure if I'm just not using them in the right way, or what, but I've never been too sold on the locator calls.

Most of the birds I've gotten on in the AM, have been by heavy pre-season scouting and knowing the general roosting areas, and therefore being set up in the AM where I can start calling to them right off the bat same private land in SE GA that I've hunted for years so easier to do than a fresh tract of land.

Last year, my brother-in-law and I started to hunt a small tract of land that we knew had turkeys on them. We were only able to hunt it a few days during the season, but it has a good number of birds on it. During the few hunts that took place on this tract, I noticed one thing. There seemed to be a fair number of woodpeckers around and anytime AM, mid-day, PM the woodpeckers would let loose with one their calls which by the way will scare the ever-loving fool out of you if one happens to let loose over your head when you've dosed off If a gobbler and real owl get into a calling duel, let the real owl do the work for you as you slip in on the tom.

After sunup many hunters switch to a loud, raspy Crow Call to make toms "shock gobble.

There are other less common locator calls used by some hunters, but these are rapidly catching on. Elk Bugling can be done on a diaphragm call and works well even though there are no native elk in the area. Finally, miniature air horns are available and work, but are a last resort. Natural calls work just as well. I'd like to commercialize the sound of a car door slamming shut, because it works well.

It's difficult to carry a car door into the woods though! Turkey calls can also be used to start a tom gobbling on the roost. The Gobble , a challenge to any nearby tom, can be made with a good Commercial Gobble Tube and is a good locator call, but it can also attract other hunters. In crowded hunting areas I use a gobble call only for pre-season scouting, at sundown or occasionally just at daybreak.

A loud Cutt or two, or a sharp Cackle will also work. Which ever locator call you choose, use it aggressively. Don't make your calls timid--sound off with an explosive and loud beginning to irritate toms into responding. Keep it short and listen for a responding gobble. Lovett E.

Luckily for hunters, there is a lot of variation between individual turkey vocalizations. Some birds have squeaky high-pitched calls while others are low and raspy. Whether your pitch is high or low, remember to keep your cadence like a turkey.

One final thought. There are a lot of turkey calling and hunting tips available for binge watching online.

More so now than ever before. Turkey hunting was so new to Oregon, there were no calls in the local sporting goods store and very little information on turkey hunting. I remember hearing the sound of a distant gobble at sunrise and it captured my imagination.
